Nervous about dental implants? You’re not alone, and you don’t have to push through it.
Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people postpone care they know they need. Some patients wait months. Others wait years, simply because the thought of sitting in a dental chair is too overwhelming to face.
At Transcend Dental, we believe fear shouldn’t stand between you and a healthy, beautiful smile, which is why we specialize in the use of IV sedation to help our most anxious patients finally get the care they deserve.
What Is IV Sedation?
IV sedation stands for intravenous sedation. It delivers a sedative medication directly into your bloodstream through a small IV line, typically placed in your arm or hand. Unlike general anesthesia, you are awake but in a relaxed, semi-conscious state. With IV sedation, patients can respond to simple instructions, but remain calm and largely unaware of the procedure.
Most patients describe feeling relaxed, and then, in seemingly moments later, the procedure is done. A two-hour procedure can feel like ten minutes, with little to no memory of the treatment itself, just a gentle, hazy awareness that it’s over.
What to Expect Before, During, and After IV Sedation
Before your appointment
At your consultation, we’ll review your medical history, current medications, and health background to confirm that IV sedation is safe for you. You’ll receive clear pre-procedure instructions, which typically include fasting for several hours beforehand and arranging for a trusted adult to drive you home afterward.
We’ll answer all your questions about the medications used, what you’ll feel, how long they last, and what recovery looks like.
During your procedure
Once the IV line is placed, the sedative takes effect within minutes. You’ll feel a profound sense of calm. Anxiety melts away, your muscles relax, and the tension that often accompanies dental implant procedures simply disappears. Our caring staff will be with you every step of the way, monitoring your vitals continuously throughout the procedure.
You’ll breathe on your own, respond if spoken to, and remain safe and comfortable the entire time. Local anesthetic is still used to numb the treatment area, ensuring you do not feel pain. With sedation, most patients don’t even notice the administration of local anesthetics.
After your procedure
After the procedure, the sedative begins to wear off relatively quickly, though you’ll want to take it easy for the rest of the day. Most patients feel groggy and relaxed for several hours. Some experience mild nausea, which passes. You’ll need a designated driver, and you shouldn’t make important decisions or operate machinery until the following day.
By the next morning, most patients feel entirely back to normal and are often surprised by how easy the whole experience was.
Minimal Pain. Maximum Comfort.
One of the most common fears about dental implants is pain. IV sedation works alongside local anesthetics to create a layered comfort experience. The sedation eliminates anxiety and creates a state of deep relaxation, while the local anesthetic ensures the treatment site is completely numb. The result is you feel little to nothing during your procedure.
Is IV Sedation Safe?
IV sedation has a long, well-established safety record when administered by trained professionals in a properly equipped facility. At Transcend Dental, our team is certified in IV sedation and monitors patients continuously throughout every procedure. We closely monitor your heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and respiratory function in real time throughout the entire procedure.
Patients with certain medical conditions, such as heart conditions, respiratory issues, or medication interactions, may not be ideal candidates for IV sedation. That’s why we conduct a thorough pre-procedure evaluation and take your full health history before recommending sedation. We will never administer IV sedation where it isn’t appropriate.
Wake Up to a Brand New Smile
That’s not just a tagline. It’s what our patients tell us after experiencing IV sedation. They can’t believe how easy it was, how calm they felt, and how much was accomplished while they were in that peaceful, relaxed state.
