Post-Surgery Care for Dental Implants

Post-Surgery Care

We understand that many patients feel some anxiety before surgery, and that’s completely normal! Our goal is to help you feel as comfortable and prepared as possible. In this guide, we’ll walk you through what to expect in the days following your dental implant procedure, along with tips to ensure a smooth recovery.

Day of Surgery

On the day of your surgery, the doctors will do everything possible to ensure you have as quick and painless a recovery as possible. When returning home, rest should be your top priority. We recommend finding a comfortable chair, sofa or bed to spend the rest of the day in, especially if you’ve had sedation. Avoid walking too much, as the effects of sedation can take up to 10 hours to wear off, increasing the risk of falls

Food and Hydration

Staying hydrated is essential for a smooth recovery. Water is the best choice, but drinks with electrolytes, like Pedialyte, can also help keep you hydrated as well.

For the first two days, stick to soft, cold, or room-temperature foods. Prioritize getting enough protein to support healing. Some great options include yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, and protein shakes.

Pain Management and Bleeding

Most patients report mild discomfort after surgery, but we want to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible. Here are some important pain management tips:

  • Take pain medication as recommended by your doctor. In most cases, this includes 600 mg of ibuprofen and 500 mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol) every six hours for the first three days.
  • If you have been prescribed pain medication, be aware that it may contain acetaminophen. Do not take additional acetaminophen if you are taking a pain medication that contains acetaminophen already.
  • Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to your jaw for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off. Continue alternating for the first 2-4 hours to help with swelling and discomfort.

Some minor bleeding is expected on the day of surgery. Your post-op kit includes gauze to help control any bleeding:

  • If you notice minor to moderate bleeding, place a piece of gauze over the area and apply firm pressure (enough to make your fingernail blanch). Hold it in place for about five minutes.
  • If bleeding continues, dampen a black tea bag, wring it out, and apply it to the bleeding site with firm pressure. The tannins in the tea can help slow bleeding
